YinYang Canyon is so named – by yours truly, since it is unnamed on maps – due to the fact that this wild and pristine canyon features two sculpted stone segments with waterfalls only about .5 mile apart which exhibit a radically different character from each other. This canyon is absolutely wild and while it can be accessed off Ortega Highway deep in the Santa Ana Mountains, I would be surprised if anyone goes up this canyon in an entire year. Directions are not given here since parking and access are particularly hazardous. But this is an example of the type of hidden magical treasure that can be discovered in our local mountains with a little research and effort. Actually, make that a lot of research and effort, but you get the picture – it’s possible!
One of these segments is composed of light rock with gentle forms, small tranquil falls, and calm reflecting pools. This segment feels peaceful and soothing, a lovely place to relax and meditate.
Not far up-stream the opposing segment is composed of an unusual black rock with sharp edges and a much larger, rushing continuous waterfall. This segment displays a restless, even perilous energy, and inspires action more than contemplation.
